Local attorney and retired judge Lowell Rayford Burgess Jr., of Antlers, passed from this life on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the age of 66. Lowell was born on November 20, 1947 to Noveline (Martin) and Lowell Burgess, Sr. He was raised in the Hall community, where the family attended the Hall Free Will Baptist Church, and was baptized in 1959 at the age of 12. Later in life he attended the Antlers Free Will Baptist Church. He attended school in Antlers for twelve years and graduated from Antlers High School in 1966. He became a United States Marine in June 1967 and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University in 1973 and a law degree from the University of Tulsa in 1976. He attended the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant (U.S. Army Reserve) in 1976. Lowell Ray practiced law with Bob Settles from 1976 to 1978 and served as Pushmataha County Associate District Judge from 1978 to 1995. He practiced law in southeast Oklahoma from 1995 to 2003 and again served as Pushmataha County Associate District Judge from 2003 until his retirement in 2009. Lowell maintained an active law practice from 2009 until death.
Lowell Ray is survived by his wife of 28 years, Karen Burgess; his parents, Lowell Sr. and Noveline Burgess; his former wife of almost 20 years and mother of his first three children, Sheila (Miller) Burgess; his children, Andrea (Burgess) Hart and husband Scott, Lori (Burgess) Sparks and husband Brandon, Adam Burgess and wife Kimberly, Allen Janoe and wife Andrea, Wayne Janoe, Joshua Burgess and wife Kylee, Mary (Burgess) Nelson and husband Bailey; eleven grandchildren, Aidan and Landon Scott, Brandon, Hunter, and Bodee Sparks, Jackson and Skye Burgess, Austin and Claire Janoe, Ayce and Jethro Nelson; two brothers, Terry Burgess and wife Kathleen, David Burgess and wife Alberta, and one sister, VeAnn (Burgess) Tilson and husband Jay. He is also survived by in-laws Edward and Joyce Brooks, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family night will be held Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 6-8pm at Burkhart Funeral Service. Memorial services will be held Friday, March 14, 2014 at 2:00pm at the First Baptist Church in Antlers with Jay Tilson officiating.
