Overspending on silly Birthdays for 5 year-olds

July 25, 2011

I have noticed when my grandkids go to birthday parties they come home with a small bag of gifts. What's up with that? I remember when I was small and I'd go to a birthday party I'd take a gift and come home with nothing but memories of having a great time. There was cake and ice cream. We'd pin the tail on a donkey and have a blast.

Who started the gift bag deal? Why in the world would you send home a goody bag unless it was leftover chocolate cake? Someone please explain that to me. Oh and while I'm on a tear, why do we have to spend a fortune on a five year old's birthday? Again, when I was young it was in Sue Baer's backyard playing croquet or volley ball. Chuckie Cheese even sounds cheap compared to what some parents spend on their kids birthday parties. I know when one starts giving a party at "Carnegie" little Johnny's parents think they have to have his party at 'the biltmore'. but come on folks what in the world are you going to do when they turn sixteen?

I think someone should take the lead and say, Okay we are back to the basics here. Little Johnny's birthday party will be at his house, in his backyard, no goody bags and all presents have to be under five dollars. I know it becomes a peer pressure game, but come on guys save the pressure for the hose in the front yard to play splash day.
