Rattan Rams take home STATE title

May 10, 2012

Last week both the Rattan Lady Rams and the Rattan Rams participated in State Baseball and Softball Tournaments, and both took home the prestigious title of State Champions.

The Rams were named Class A Baseball State Champs and were awarded Class A Academic Achievement Certificates.

A parade of more than 70 vehicles, including lights and sirens, escorted them through Antlers on their way home to Rattan.

The Rams Recap: In the dugout after the sixth inning, Rattan's Jonathan Samuels came over to Blake Watts.

“If Landon (Carper) gets on, I'm getting him home,” Samuels told his teammate.

Samuels did more than that, blasting a two-run home run to left to help lift Rattan to a 5-2 win over Amber-Pocasset to take the Class A state title at Palmer Field at Dolese Park on Saturday afternoon.

The home run was Samuels' third of the tournament. He hit a pair in Rattan's semifinal win over Pioneer on Friday, including a two-run game-winning home run.

The title was the fifth spring title and the 11th overall for the Rams. Their last title came in spring 2003.

Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Famer Leo Smallwood, a longtime Rattan coach and administrator, has been in attendance for every one of Rattan's titles. The first came in the spring of 1981. Smallwood, 95, watched Saturday's game from a chair along the fence and was acknowledged by the team after the game.

Rattan came from behind in the seventh in each of its state tournament games.

In Thursday's 5-2 win over Caddo, the Rams scored four in the top of the seventh before Watts finished it off in the bottom half.

Watts got off to a rough start on the mound, giving up runs in the first two innings while Amber-Pocasset's Ryan Cauthen mowed down Rattan's lineup.

But Watts quickly found his stride, striking out three consecutive batters to end the second after the Rams fell behind 2-0.

Watts went the distance, striking out 10 and getting the final batter, Josh Jackson, to bounce back up the middle to win the game with the tying run on base.

Rattan (30-7) tied the game in the fourth on back-to-back doubles, the second by Davidson. Davidson came in to score on Samuels' sacrifice fly. That was the end of the scoring until Samuels' next at-bat in the seventh.

After Carper led off with a single, Samuels took a curveball in the dirt before blasting Cauthen's fastball down the middle over the fence to put Rattan ahead for the first time in the game and they went on to win with a final score of 5-2 over Amber-Pocasset.
