SOIC/Region 6 Regional Prevention Coordinators, Choctaw County Coalition and Pushmataha County Coalition would like to encourage community members to observe Alcohol Awareness Month to help prevent alcohol abuse in our community. This is an opportunity to help raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol dependence and encourage people to make healthy and safe choices when it comes to alcohol. Alcohol is the fourth leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 24, as reported by SAMSHA.
Underage drinking facts: Vehicle Accidents are the # 1 killer of teens and young adults 16-25 years of age; Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for America's young people, more than tobacco or illicit drugs; and those that begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin at age 21.
“During Alcohol Awareness Month we want to draw attention to the dangers related to alcohol abuse and underage drinking and connect our youth and adults with resources that can help them," said Amber Kent, Regional Prevention Coordinator for the Regional Prevention Coordinators.
Several Events are planned to be held in the community recognizing this annual event and to assist in educating residents on ways to keep their communities safe.
