The Moyers Tigers traveled all last week, first up for the Tigers was Milburn. First up was the Lady Tigers. The first half was rough on the Lady Tigers, we put up a lot of shots, but nothing was falling in our favor. Sophomore Shelby Clark scored first for the team with a free-throw and Jr. Calli Winters secured the first basket for the girls. Sr. Carrie Collins battled tough under the boards but at half, Milburn was in the lead 27-10. Shelby Clark got the third started off right with a basket and Sophomore Gabby Renteria and Jr. Tanna Thomas worked hard under the goal to give the Ladies in black the ball. Freshman Becka Heath secured a steal and easy layup, but in the end the Ladies fell short 40-20.
The boys would take to the court next. Moyers is currently ranked 14th in the state and Milburn is not too far behind, so this would be a tough matchup for the boys. Jr. Brandon Slocum won the opening tip for the Tigers and this quickly became a fast paced, aggressive ball game. The Tigers had the lead 11-7 after one, but Milburn was not going to lay down to the Tigers and quickly took the lead back, at half Milburn was in command 21-18. The Tigers battled hard led by the 3 seniors Zach Brittingham and Terrell Morgan and Jake Mattingly under the basket for rebounds, but it wasn’t until the 4th quarter that the boys seemed to find their groove. Jr. Jake Dudley scored 12 points in the 4th to help the Tigers get back in the game. At 1:14 left if was 39-39.
Pressure defense and great passing led to some turnovers and easy baskets for the boys and with 13.0 seconds left Moyers was in the lead 41-40. Jake Dudley came thru when needed and cinched the deal with two free throws to give the Tigers the win 43-40. Jake Dudley led the scoring 18, Brandon Slocum with 12, Jake Mattingly with 9, Zach Brittingham with a pair, and Caleb Armstrong with 2.
Next the Tigers would travel to Soper. The Lady Tigers started the game out right with Shelby Clark hitting an opening basket. The Ladies played tough defense but Soper seemed to hit anywhere on the floor and had a 26-5 lead at half. The Lady Tigers never gave up and battled hard to stay in the fight, but fell short of the victory 46-12. Shelby Clark led the scoring with 8, Becka Heath had 2, Gabby Renteria with 1, and Tanna Thomas added one. Next up would be the Tigers. Having beat Soper earlier in the year, the Tigers knew the Red Bears would be out for revenge and they got it. Soper won the opening tip and it seemed to be all Soper.
The Tigers couldn’t seem to buy a basket. Jake Dudley and Caleb Armstrong got hot and kept the Tigers within distance only down 28-27 at half. Sophomore Sebastian Cowen added some much needed rebounding for the Tigers but again the boys struggled on offense in a heated game. Jake Dudley and Caleb kept the pressure on with the points but the boys couldn’t seem to find the momentum to give them the push they needed. With 2:08 left, Soper had the lead 54-53. Jake Mattingly hit some clutch free throws to tie the game and Jake Dudley came through with free throws to give the Tigers a 2 point lead with seconds left.
It was a nail biter, Soper inbounded the ball and drove the court with the clock ticking and hit a pull up jumper for 3 to beat the Tigers 58-57. It was a good game enjoyed by all. Jake Dudley led the scoring with 26, Caleb Armstrong followed with 16, Jake Mattingly with 8, Terrell Morgan with 3, Zach Brittingham with 2 and Sebastian Cowen with a pair.
